Implementation of General Environment Duty under the EP Act
Guidance material to support the implementation
On the 1 July 2021, the state's revised and updated Environment Protection Amendment Act (the Act) came into force. A major aspect of the revised Act is the concept of General Environmental Duty (or GED). The concept of GED is explained on the EPA website.
Whilst the water industry is supportive of a proactive, rather than reactive approach to the management of environment, there is not much detail as to how GED will be specifically applied to the water industry.
To provide some clarity on how GED will be applied, VicWater is delivering a project to develop a number of guidance documents to help support an agreed and consistent approach to, and application of GED to Victorian water corporations.
