Someone once said that collaboration is the DNA of the knowledge economy.
This month, Elisa and I visited the WIOA office in Shepparton to commence putting in place the collaborative initiatives we agreed to do in the MoU we signed with WIOA and VicWater a few weeks back. One of those initiatives is for IWN to fund and support an Operator led trial at the WIOA Conference in Bendigo on 28-29 February 2024. Operators will have the opportunity to recommend to IWN a trial with an exhibitor of their choice at the WIOA Conference. The chosen trial will be announced at lunch on the second day of the conference. Stay tuned for more details.

Last week, the IWN Leadership Team got together to commence the creation of the IWN Strategy for the next few years. It really is a privilege to be working with such a passionate, engaged and smart team of people that represent our members. The theme of our discussion was about how we create capacity within IWN to continue to grow our contribution to sector transformation, innovation and delivering member and partner value. We will continue to work on our member led strategy over the next 8 weeks and I look forward to sharing the outcome of that with you early in 2024.
I had the pleasure this week of attending the inaugural Victorian Bioenergy Network Conference in Ballarat. We heard about the tremendous work that’s happening in the Bioenergy space and the opportunity that Bioenergy presents for reducing the release of sequestered carbon in fossil fuels. Of interest was the opportunity for Biomethane to substitute fossil gas and the substitution of high quality Biodiesel in heavy fleet – biodiesel that is produced right here in Victoria at Just Biodiesel. Congratulations to Ragini Prasad and her team for a tremendous conference. https://www.linkedin.com/company/victorian-bioenergy-network/

PYROCO Mark II Trial 2023
Following the successful technical validation trials in 2021, the PYROCO Mark II trial is assessing the potential of developing functionalised biochar products derived from FOGO and Biosolids feedstocks to strengthen the Victorian biochar supply ecosystem. Trial partners RMIT University, DEECA, South-East Water, IWN, Greater Western Water, East Gippsland Water and Westernport Water will co-pyrolyse various blended feedstock formulations to create biochars of different characteristics and use cases enabling a techno-commercial feasibility assessment of the approach.
PYROCO is a first of its kind in Australia, developed by RMIT University, it uses high temperatures to destroy pathogens, PFAS, microplastics and pharmaceutical contaminants in biosolids creating biochar with applications ranging from agricultural soil amendment to the creation of advanced carbon materials.
Group of visitors and stakeholders at PYROCO Mark II trial on Friday 24 November.

Please contact us at enquiries@iwn.org.au if you'd like a copy of the report or link to the Webinar.
