Smart Technology for Stormwater Management (FREE event)

Learn how sensors, monitoring systems and smart technologies are transforming stormwater management.

Session highlights:

  • Exploring a range of smart technology applications, especially real-time control (RTC) – including smart water tanks, smart wetlands and catchment-scale integrated systems – for improved stormwater management outcomes and flood mitigation with the help of 3 case studies.
  • Construction, maintenance and key design considerations for RTC systems including control algorithms, valve operation, safety requirements, optimisation-based and rule-based approaches, etc.
  • A site visit to one of the case studies sites – Birdsland Reserve Lakes, part of the Monbulk Creek Smart Water Network (MCSWN).

Audience:

  • WSUD designers, stormwater engineers, IWM practitioners, local government staff, water authority staff, consultants, asset planners and managers and professionals involved in stormwater harvesting, infiltration and water quality improvement projects

Where: Birdsland Environmental Education Centre, Unit 1/271 Mt Morton Rd, Belgrave Heights VIC 3160, Australia

When: Wednesday, 11 November 2026 | 9:00am to 12:00pm and 1:00pm to 4:00pm

Maintenance of Street-Scale WSUD Assets

Street-scale WSUD assets only deliver their intended benefits when they’re well maintained. This practical workshop explores maintenance considerations, common challenges and best-practice approaches for keeping these assets functioning effectively over the long term.

Session Highlights:

  • Key functions and components of street-scale WSUD
  • Key maintenance requirements of street-scale WSUD
  • On-site practical maintenance activity
  • Asset inspection exercises
  • Maintenance strategies of different organisations – facilitated group discussion
  • Site visits (transport provided)

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understand the basic concepts of WSUD and Integrated water management (IWM)
  • Understand the function, design and key components of street-scale WSUD assets such as bioretention systems, swales, tree-pits and permeable pavements.
  • Know the maintenance needs of street-scale WSUD assets
  • Build your ability to carry out maintenance inspections of street-scale WSUD assets using supporting checklists.
  • Understand differences in WSUD asset maintenance strategies of different organisations.

Audience:

  • Anyone responsible for the hands-on maintenance, or influencing the maintenance of, street-scale WSUD assets, such as maintenance crews, supervisors and managers.
  • Stormwater Engineers and urban designers who wish to enhance their understanding of the maintenance practicalities and to improve asset design.
