The VicWater Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee is thrilled to share that the Australian Water Association (AWA) is connecting diverse talents with experienced mentors, providing guidance, support, and opportunities for professional growth.
AWA has launched a pilot National Mentoring Program in 2025 to connect aspiring water professionals to a community of passionate members, with nominations for mentees opening on Thursday 6 February.
The new national program is facilitated through a purpose-built digital platform to ensure seamless mentor-mentee matching, communication, and progress tracking. This exclusive program for AWA members is structured to foster meaningful relationships, whether participants are in a major city or a remote location.
VicWater’s Diversity and Inclusion Steering Committee is leveraging the program to encourage connections, support and empower people with diverse backgrounds and experiences in the water sector.
Committee chairperson Deb Fankhauser said adding a diversity lens to the pilot program was an opportunity to trial mentorship to create a more inclusive and equitable water industry, fostering an environment where everyone, regardless of background, could thrive.
“Diversity and inclusion are essential for driving innovation and excellence,” she said. “By providing a platform for emerging leaders from underrepresented groups to connect with seasoned professionals, the program has the potential to bridge gaps, eliminate biases, and cultivate a culture of respect and understanding.
“Mentoring programs can be more than just professional development; they are about empowering individuals to reach their full potential and creating a water industry where everyone feels valued and respected.”
Participation in the program could support the Victorian water sector achieve objectives under its Diversity Equity and Inclusion Strategy 2024-2028.
Ms Fankhauser said participants didn’t need to be a senior leader to be a great mentor.
“If you are established in your field of work, you can support others to develop and gain some great leadership experience along the way. The best mentor-mentee relationships occur when learning is reciprocated both ways,” she said.
The pilot program is available to AWA members at no cost, employees of Corporate Members may also participate as Mentors at no cost and as Mentees for $100.
