Isobel Decru joined IWN as Deputy Program Director in September 2024, bringing a broad range of experience and a fresh perspective to the role. Isobel is excited to work with IWN’s members and partners to shape a brighter future for the water sector.

How did you end up in the water industry?

My passion for the water industry began during my Environmental Science degree. This passion led me to South East Water in 2019, where I kicked off as an intern and later became a Research Officer. I worked primarily on all things related to biosolids, which made for a fascinating start to my career, but as a scientist, I found biosolids pretty cool.

You had two roles, right?

Indeed! In 2022, I took on the role of Project Officer with the ARC Training Centre for the Transformation of Australia’s Biosolids Resource at RMIT University, working two days a week. We often shortened it to the Transforming Biosolids Training Centre—though that was still a bit of a mouthful! This role was incredibly valuable for my professional growth and played a big part in preparing me for my current position at IWN.

What do you do for fun outside of work?

Almost 10 years ago, I used to swim competitively and even made it to the Nationals for the 100 backstroke. These days, I’m more into netball and volleyball, playing in social leagues. I’ve also turned into something of a bookworm lately. There’s nothing better than curling up with a good book, a hot chocolate, and a blanket on a rainy day.

Tell us about your family and personal life.

Family is a huge part of my life. I have two adorable nephews, ages 1 and 3, who are basically the cutest little humans ever (I know, everyone says that, but it’s true!).

I also spend my Friday nights as a youth leader, hanging out with year 7-8 girls at youth group. It’s been such a joy watching them grow from the end of year 6 to where they are now.

What gets you excited about IWN?

Joining IWN has been a huge deal for me, and I’m incredibly excited to be here. What really motivates me is the dedication everyone has to making a difference in the water industry. The volunteers and leaders are so passionate, and I love how IWN invests in people’s growth. It feels like being part of a team where everyone supports each other and strives for the best.

What do you want to achieve with IWN?

At IWN, I want to continue to drive innovation and support collaboration to help transform the water industry. I want to help industry professionals build leadership skills within themselves and the broader sector. My goal is to contribute to a more resilient, sustainable, and forward-thinking water industry that benefits everyone.

How does your past experience shape your current role?

Everything I learned from working with South East Water and the ARC Training Centre has been a stepping stone to my role at IWN. The focus on investing in people and creating opportunities for growth really resonates with me. I’m eager to bring that same energy and enthusiasm to the team and continue making a positive impact.
