ABOUT IDAHOBIT

Why May 17? This date commemorates the anniversary of when the World Health organisation removed homosexuality from the International Classification of Diseases in 1990. Prior to this, homosexuality was classified globally as a mental illness.

As recently as 1997, being gay was illegal in some parts of Australia – and it was only six years ago that same-sex marriage was not recognised in our country. While we have certainly come a long way in the advancements of LGBTIQA+ equity, the unfortunate reality is that these milestones are very recent in our experience.

Why is IDAHOBIT still important today?

  • 68% of LGBTIQA+ employees in Australia are not out to everyone at work.
  • 2 in 3 LGBTIQA+ youth experience abuses due to their identity.
  • 35% of LGBTIQA+ Australians have experienced verbal abuse in the past 12 months.

The International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT) 2024 theme is “No one left behind: equality, freedom and justice for all”.
